Prior Knowledge and Skills:
Students have experience with Garageband or another like sequencing program.

Materials:
TV, VCR. Show students an example of a theme to a nightly news program. You may also choose to create a clip in iMovie that features your own students or take a clip from TV and save it in Quicktime Player.
Objectives:
High School students in a beginning music technology course will create a 30 second intro theme to the nightly news. Students will be asked to add a vocal track that will introduce the show and the hosts.
Procedures:
Explain to students that they have been hired to create a new lead-in theme for the local news station. They must create a 30 second clip to be used in the program. Students will use Garageband or a like sequencer to create tracks that will be used in their clip. They may create original music with the MIDI keyboard, use the built in loops or a combination of the two. Students will add a vocal track to the project to announce the news program and the news anchor.
Evaluation:
Class will listen to each of their classmates clips. The clips will be performed with the video clip shown previously with the sound turned down, so that they can see and hear what their clip would sound like. If you have a TV clip in Quicktime Player, you can drop the audio clip into the player to have them sync up instead of eyeballing it.
Items to Purchase:
Garageband is free with purchase of any Macintosh computer.
Other sequencers are purchased for a modest price.
