Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Students will have been taught the notes on the Viola in 1st postion, open C string to 4th finger on the A string .Also, students will have been taught basic computer skills using Sibelius Music Software

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 2: Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
MENC 4: Composing and Arranging Music within specified guidelines.
MENC 5: Reading and notating music.

Materials:

Computers and Violas

Objectives:

After a year and a half of study, students should be able to read and perform notes in the 1st postion before going on to advance study.

Procedures:

String Viola Class Lesson 60 min.

  • Students will come in and review their studies from the following week. (scales, etudes and solo piece) 20 min.
  • Students will review notes and basic rhythms using Sibelius music software. 10 min
  • Students will them go to a work sheet in Sibelius naming and putting in fingerings 10 min.
  • Students will compose an 8 measure melody using the notes on the Viola in 1st postion and using the Viola sound on the computer.10.min
  • Students will before their piece for the class. 10 min

Evaluation:

Students will have a solid understanding of notes on the Viola in 1st postion
