Prior Knowledge and Skills:

Students should have basic knowledge of the following:
1. How to record in a MIDI Sequencing Program (Master Tracks)
2. Students have listen to and analyzed recordings of remixed songs.
3. Basic piano skills

MENC Standards Addressed:

MENC 3: Improvising melodies, harmonies, and accompaniments.
MENC 4: Composing and Arranging Music within specified guidelines.
MENC 6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music.

Materials:

MIDI Files of Hot Cross Buns and Happy Birthday.
Note: Any MIDI file can be used. Just delete the bass and drum tracks.

Objectives:

Students will use the MIDI files provided (Hot Cross Buns and Happy Birthday)and will compose a bass and drum track for each file. Student will listen to the file(s) practice and record appropriate bass lines and drum tracks.

This is a lesson in a series that leads up to students recording a rhythm section from scratch.

Procedures:

Students will analyze differnt songs that have been remixed to understand the concept.

Using songs that are familiar to students will make this lesson successful.

Evaluation:

Students will be evaluated on the following:

1. Does the bass line follow the chords (given out in class)?
2. Is the bass track in time?
3. Is the drum track in time?

Follow Up:

Follow up lesson would be for students to record a rhythm section from scratch.
